Chancay Port will revolutionize trade between Peru and Asia
“Heads of State of China and Peru inaugurated the mega infraestructure that will be a world-class hub.”
President Dina Boluarte and the President of China, Xi Jinping, led the inauguration at the ceremony from the Government Palace in Lima, linked to the Chancay port. This mega-project will consolidate Peru as a world-class logistics, technological and industrial center, and also Peru will be strategically projected it in the Asia Pacific region.
“Chancay, together with the International Jorge Chávez Airport, the Port of Callao, the development of railway infrastructure, special economic zones and industrial parks; will position Peru as a key player in global trade,” said Boluarte. She added that Chancay is the Inca trail that once united the empire that encompassed all of South America.
“Chancay will be that beginning so that we can make the journey to the Asian world and unite those two immense worlds,” said the head of state. She then pointed out that the first stage of the Chancay megaport required an investment of 1.3 billion dollars, and once its operations began it would contribute up to 0.9 points to the Peruvian GDP.
“Its importance is undeniable. It will not only connect our products more efficiently with Asian markets, but it will also boost Peru’s competitiveness, generating more jobs and boosting the economy,” she emphasized. She also highlighted that with the Chancay megaport, Latin Americans are being provided with a gateway to connect, in both directions, with the Asia-Pacific region. We invite you to have Chancay as your gateway to the world. Peru will welcome you with open arms, always guaranteeing legal security. We are a reliable partner and today, with the inauguration of the Chancay megaport, we are ratifying it,” she stressed.
At another time, Boluarte highlighted that China plays a key role in the growth of Peruvian economy. She recalled that in 2013 both nations agreed to establish a comprehensive strategic partnership, which has strengthened the bilateral relations in trade, technology, infrastructure and innovation. “China has become our main trading partner.
This country is the destination of more than 36% of our exports and the origin of an investment of more than 30,000 million dollars, positively impacting key sectors such as mining and infrastructure,” she highlighted. For his part, the president of China expressed his gratitude to the professionals and technicians who made the construction of the port possible, despite difficulties such as the covid-19 pandemic. “A modern port was built in just a few years,” he said, also highlighting that it is the first smart port in South America.
Xi Jinping stated that with the operation of this port terminal the time of the “maritime transport from China to Peru will be reduced by more than ten days, and also more than 20% of the logistics costs”. The Chinese president also said that his country and Peru must “work together to successfully complete the construction and operation of the port.” He pointed out that, from now on, transport will be facilitated “from Shanghai to Chancay” entering trade between the two countries into “a new era.
